Living in Georgetown
Georgetown takes its name from George Kennedy, one of five brothers in the early 1800s who prospered here through their farms and mills. Georgetown has maintained much of its original heritage, including featuring many streets named after the Kennedy family and a picturesque main street that is almost 200 years old.
If you buy a home in Georgetown, you’ll likely be drawn to this vibrant downtown, which offers something for everyone. In the evenings, hungry diners enjoy everything from Italian to pub food, sushi to Thai to Chinese, steakhouses and even upscale small plate dining. There’s also a renowned cheese shop, unique gift shops, clothing stores, salons and more.
From June through early October, the Downtown Georgetown Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning. Buskers play or sing on each corner, local produce and flower stalls line the streets, and the scent of fresh bread and peameal bacon sandwiches wafts through the air.
The downtown also features plenty of family-friendly attractions, including the Halton Hills Cultural Centre and the Georgetown Public Library, which retains some of the building’s original heritage, as it was renovated from the Congregational Church sanctuary.
Surrounding the downtown are year-round recreation spots and all the modern conveniences, including several grocery stores, big box stores and even an indoor mall with a food court, Homesense, SportCheck and Wal-Mart.

Georgetown real estate saw some of its biggest gains in 2016-2017 with homes appreciating in value over 30-40% from the previous year. Area bungalows, built in the 1960s, were in hot demand and were selling in the $600,000s in mid-2016 and selling in the mid $700,000s in mid-2017. If you’re interested in buying a home in Georgetown, the market has slowed down since the recent mortgage and interest rate changes, with homes taking an average 2-3 weeks on the market now or longer. Gains continue, but they are not as high as they were in previous years.
GEORGETOWN: The best of a large small town
Georgetown is located just west of the Peel Region, and is known for its friendly demeanor, where people still say hello and store employees greet you with a smile. Georgetown has been able to retain this small-town character, even while continuing to grow slowly.
With the GO train and bus station in town and with stops throughout Georgetown’s main arteries, it remains a popular place for those who commute to downtown Toronto for work.
